What is going on over there? They have been involved in some of the worst political decisions I have ever heard of these past few years. The most recent decision involves one school district banning the teaching of Mexican-American Studies courses. The LA Times summed it up as follows:
"The Tucson school board voted to end the program after Arizona's education chief had ruled the district in violation of a controversial state law banning classes designed for a particular ethnic group or that 'promote the overthrow of the U.S. government.'"
Interestingly, the Tuscon school board has no problem with African-American or Asian-American Studies, an argument that they would certainly make in an effort to prove that they are not racist. Thoughts?
That is SO Arizona. The phrasing of the state statute banning classes designed for a particular ethnic group does raise a question: Does it not also prohibit classes aimed at those of European descent? What, then, to make of American history the way Arizonans want it taught? And what, exactly, constitutes promoting the overthrow of the U.S. government? Thoughtless policy, thoughtless approach.
